Unlimited coffee in an office or at home is dangerous business. We can almost become mindless, sipping away all day! Overdoing it on caffeine has become almost the norm in this western culture of “hustle” – it blocks our body’s signals telling us…
“Hey!! You’re tired! You NEEED to sleep to flush out the toxins and excess cortisol!”
“You know, life is to be enjoyed too! Breathe in and out, my friend!!”
Since my convocation last week and sensing some freedom from an intense schedule, I’ve started to notice just how overstimulated my body has been for the last 6 years of my life. Trying to balance school, work, and social while recovering from a concussion brought about a lot of fatigue for me! In an effort to keep up, I overrode my body’s messages to me by WAAAY overdoing it on coffee consumption.
So, for the month of June, my goal has been to ENJOY (key word is “Enjoy” 🙂 ) one cup of coffee per day.
There’s something really nice about a ritual of sitting outside enjoying a single cup of coffee. I mean reeeally enjoying every single sip. Noticing the taste, the smell, the steam rising from the mug as the birds outside chirp; being mindful not to slurp it down out of habit.
This habitual slurping is driven need to stay awake; to keep up with the pace of society. And happens everywhere- libraries, offices, hospitals… you name it! Let’s start actually doing for our body what it needs- some sleep, stretching, exercise, and good nutrition are good places to start.
Here are 4 coffee alternatives to brighten your morning when you want to stay in tune with your body and the present moment!
